How do I get to Orlando?

You can fly to either Orlando International or Sanford International Airports. Orlando is larger and used by the major airlines, while the charter companies use Sanford.

We have found that although Orlando is closer to Calabay Parc at Tower Lake, you can clear US customs and immigration more quickly at Sanford, then collect your luggage and rental car and be on your way in a fraction of the time required at Orlando. The journey down Highway 417 (called the Central Florida Greeneway) is generally pleasant and relaxing and the tolls only cost a few dollars. Sanford now also has a very pleasant VIP Lounge.

How do I book?

Please check the availability on our calendar and then email us at enquiries@lakerisevilla.com (please include your name and state whether you wish to be contacted by email or telephone).

Where is the nearest hospital?

The Heart of Florida general hospital is just 5 minutes away on Highway 27, and there is a walk-in medical center next to Walmart. Make sure you have adequate travel insurance!

What is the weather like?

Please click here for information from Weather.com for Haines City. Florida is the lightning capital of the USA so please also click here for lightning safety advice from About.com (tips at the bottom of the page).

How do I get to Disney?

Disney World can be accessed both from Highway 27 north of Interstate 4 (I4) via Highway 192, or by driving north (signs say 'East') on I4. In our experience over recent years, traffic on I4 can be very busy at peak times on this stretch, so Highway 27 provides a convenient and quick alternative route, both to and from Disney, for residents of Calabay Parc at Tower Lake. Highway 192 east of I4, especially in Kissimmee, and other roads in the vicinity of Disney World can also be virtually solid with traffic at times. Access from Highway 27 is usually fairly easy.

Will my UK DVDs/games work?

No. Only Region 1 (USA and Canada) DVDs and Xbox 360 games will work in the villa.

How is driving in Florida?

It is very important that you read the information provided by the car rental companies. There are several important rules and regulations that you need to know before you drive in Florida (eg: when you are forbidden from overtaking school buses and emergency vehicles; seat belt and child seat regulations; etc...)

It is important to obey the speed limits (even though the locals often don't). These are usually clearly displayed, but be aware that the limit may change quite frequently in built-up areas. Also be aware that on multi-lane highways you will be overtaken on BOTH sides. Interstate exits are usually advised well ahead, to give you time to get into the correct exit lane.

Do NOT drink and drive. Florida has very tough DUI laws.

Take great care turning left, especially when joining or leaving dual carriageways (such as Highway 27 from Bates Road). If traffic is very heavy and you are fed-up waiting to cross, consider turning right and going to the next set of traffic lights (or gap in the central reservation) and doing a U-turn.

Although Interstate 4 runs pretty much north/south through Orlando, directions are usually given as 'East' (for north) or 'West' (for south), since the overall direction of the route is east/west.

If you are hit by another vehicle from behind and are able to continue driving then do not stop, but continue to a well-lit public area and/or find a police officer.

If you are disabled and have a blue permit in the UK, you can obtain a temporary permit in Florida from the local county tax office at no cost, which allows you to use disabled parking bays in Orlando car parks, including those at theme parks.

Be careful manoeuvring in car parks - pedestrians have right of way, and some will tell you off sharply if you move even slightly when they are near you!

Mobile phones and Sat-Nav?

If you have a tri- or quad-band mobile phone then get the international bars lifted before you travel, and take it in case of emergencies (a phone card will be much cheaper for phoning home). The US emergency telephone number is 911.

Consider getting Sat-Nav: it makes the task of getting to the theme parks, shops and restaurants much easier. It will also make it easier to get back to Calabay Parc at Tower Lake. You can hire one from Car Rental Companies such as Alamo and Avis when you arrive. Alternatively if you're planning to buy one this is a good excuse to get a model that includes North American mapping.
